Electrician’s Tips on Cleaning Light Bulbs
The website Wisegeek enumerated the most common electrical problems in a home or commercial property that will usually send its occupants calling for an electrician. American Lighting Association
“There are four very common electrical problems: intermittent power, power surges, redundant wiring, and overloaded circuits. All these issues can cause electrical fires and need to be addressed and corrected as soon as possible. These issues are easy to identify and correct. Intermittent power is a symptom of a wiring problem. The cause of this common electrical problem is loose wiring. To check for this type of problem, trace the electrical cable from the unit to the plug. Look for any sign of wear, fray, or exposed wiring. Take apart the electrical item to locate the connection point of the power to the unit.”

Problems with Electrical Outlets
Another common electrical concern homeowners may face are sparking outlets. Master Electrician This was highlighted in one of Angie’s list’s articles on electrical troubleshooting.
“Electrical outlets sparks: While it can be scary when you see a spark fly from an outlet, sometimes it’s normal. For example, when power is suddenly diverted to an appliance, a quick draw on the available power will occur, causing a brief spark. Once the electrons are flowing freely, a spark should have no reason to form. This is normal, and it’s comparable to static electricity. If too much heat builds up in an outlet, however, it can actually melt the insulation that surrounds the wires. As the wires become exposed, the chance for an electrical fire increases. When a connection is made, the electrons can leap to the wrong area and cause a serious spark. This is known as a short circuit and can actually cause an electrical fire.” Read the rest of this article here.

The website This Old House also came out with a list of common electrical concerns of most homeowners, what it means and what can be done about it.
“What it means: The panel contains more circuits than it’s rated to handle, because too many single-pole breakers (one circuit) have been replaced with tandem breakers (two circuits) in one slot. (Tandem breakers aren’t the same as high-amp double-pole breakers, which take up two slots with one circuit.) A label on each panel specifies how many circuits the panel can accommodate.
